The Fritz Nitrate Test Kit makes it easy to measure nitrate levels in both freshwater and saltwater aquariums. Nitrate is the final stage of the ammonia cycle and, while less toxic than ammonia or nitrite, high levels can stress fish, fuel algae growth, and impact overall water quality. Because nitrate is continuously produced as fish respire and waste breaks down, it’s important to test regularly and perform routine maintenance to keep levels under control. In most freshwater tanks, acceptable levels range between 20–40 ppm, while in saltwater aquariums, levels should be kept below 20 ppm.
